Previous research has shown that children living with parents who use drugs were found to be of lower socioeconomic status and have more difficulties in social, academic and family functioning when compared with children with parents who do not consume alcohol or use any drugs.
A 25-year old lady who is an active drug user, said she was introduced to drugs at the age of 12 after the death of her mother. Gender based violence between her parents, led to the death of her mother and her dad later married another woman. After her mother died, no one wanted to associate with her including her own father. Akoth, had no option but to ran away from home.
She started using drugs and became a serious drug addict. Once she got pregnant, she never used to visit the hospitals for her clinics. Akoth later gave birth to a disabled child and left him at her father’s doorstep, till now she has never gone back to her father’s house and doesn’t know if her child is alive or dead.
Akoth later had yet another child and still, she wasn’t in a position to take care of him. She left the child lying at the gate of a children’s home. She said she got her children through hardship with absentee fathers because they were also drug users.
Children born on the streets are always neglected by their parents because they give drugs the first priority.
