Change is expected in Nairobi County. Since after evaluation and consultation Benson Mutura remains the best. Nairobi County can rely on the speaker for betterment.

Benson Mutura, Nairobi Speaker official swearing has taken place today Monday, December 21st, 2020. This takes place following Sonko’s impeachment on Thursday. Mutura is now Nairobi County’s acting Governor.

Mutura whose inauguration initially set for Friday unfortunately is postponed. This happens after the presiding judge missed a crucial constitutional timeframe. This required swearing-in ceremonies to take place between 10 am and 2 pm. He will act for a period not exceeding sixty days.


Change for better

Given that Nairobi County currently has no deputy governor, the speaker will serve for the next two months, as the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) sets a date for a by-election.

Nairobians will then go back to the polls to elect a new governor who will serve the remainder of the term, ending in 2022.

Under Article 182 section 4 and 5 a County Assembly Speaker assumes the Governor’s office. This where the Deputy Governor is unable to take over following a vacancy.

The law requires an organisation for a by-election. But this is within sixty days from the date the Assembly Speaker assumes the office of the Governor.

The Speaker becomes second in line after the Deputy Governor. In whose case the law allows service for the remainder of the governor’s term without a requirement for a by-election.

A Deputy Governor who takes over for a period exceeding half a term is deemed to have served a full term as Governor.

Nairobi Deputy Governor Polycarp Igathe however resigned in January 2018 citing Sonko’s lack of confidence in him.


Mutura said that his first order of business would be to bring back on track the delivery of crucial services. Since some goods have stalled-due to lack of funds occasioned by the failure of former Governor Sonko to assent to the finance Bill.

Mutura from his past works might change the county for better.
