At least fifteen people have succumbed early today morning after a grisly road accident along Mombasa-Malindi Highway. This tragedy occurred after two buses collided head-on at the Kwa Mkikuyu stage around Kizingo.

The accident involved a Muhsin bus traveling from Mombasa to Garissa and a Sabaki shuttle minibus heading to Mombasa from Marereni. Sadly, both drivers died on the spot. In addition, several Kilifi County Government employees died due to the crash.

According to eyewitnesses, the driver of the Garissa-bound bus was overtaking when he lost control and hit the oncoming Sabaki shuttle omnibus.

Accident claims at least 15 lives

The accident left many in critical conditions while some remain trap in the wretched vehicles. Kilifi County Commissioner Kutswa Olaka issued the official communication. As of now, he confirms fifteen people have already lost their lives. Those critically injured were immediately rushed to Malindi Tawfiq Hospital and also Kilifi Sub-County. Kilifi sub-county doctors confirmed having received seven bodies from the accident scene. Later on, a patient succumbed while receiving treatment in the same hospital. In addition, they also received eighteen casualties.

However, Kilifi Sub County Hospital received patients in critical conditions. They immediately rushed them to the Intensive Care Unit. Currently, all the patients are undergoing treatment. Witnesses blame the ongoing road construction for the accident. According to them, the road remains uncompleted for months and it’s raised. In his statement, Kilifi County Governor Amason Kingi expresses his condolences.

It’s regrettable that accidents continue to claim precious lives on our roads. This occurs despite calls to motorists to strictly adhere to the given traffic regulations to avoid such tragic outcomes,” stated Kilifi County Governor.  A team comprising of the Kenya red cross, Kilifi County Government, well-wishers, and also the police quickly took the injured to various hospitals.
