Social media is a good way of communicating and getting informed about things going on within and outside the country. But also it has the negative effects. Kids using Facebook and other social media sites are at a greater risk of suffering from them.
In online interactions, people with unknown identities may easily indulge in hate speech or disrespectful behavior.
One of the big problems with these social media sites is that the children do not read the privacy settings of their accounts and if they do, probably they do not understand them. Therefore they are unaware of the risks of disclosing unnecessary personal information. Such kids may easily become victims of the identity theft.
Children spending too much time online may ignore the importance of and the appropriate behavior related to face to face contact. Due to this, the set of interpersonal skills that are necessary for the success in their real life may not develop properly.
Addiction can be an effect of social media on teenagers. Scientists have found that overuse of social media creates a stimulation pattern similar to the one created by other addictive drug users.
Facebook depression is an emotional disturbance caused by social media usage. When a teenager is made to feel inferior to the social media counterparts, they fall into depression which is commonly known as facebook depression.
Cyber bullying is another negative effect of social media , where people share false, embarrassing or hostile information to specific users. Victims of cyber bullying often end up with psychological problems like depression, isolation, loneliness, stress, anxiety, low self esteem and suicidal tendencies.
