Nyamira Governor died while undergoing treatment at the Nairobi Hospital, where he had been admitted for the past three weeks. He now becomes the fourth governor to die while in office.
In a condolence message to the Governor’s family, President Uhuru Kenyatta Eulogises the Governor as a wise and witty man.
John Obiero Nyagarama won Election as Nyamira County Governor on 8th August, 2017 Kenya General Elections 2017. He belongs to the Jubilee party.
John Nyagarama was born in 1946 in Nyakemincha. Therefore he dies at 74 years.
Nyamira governor illness
“He was a patient on increased oxygen demand. He stayed in the Covid-19 ICU under the care of doctors and nurses who are dealing with the coronavirus cases,” a source familiar with the governor’s treatment said.
Medics managed him for 21 days and a final test conducted on him last week and the results were negative.
Doctors also recommended for transfer of Nyagarama to the normal ICU to proceed with close medical monitoring as his lungs has suffered “multiple failures”.
State House Mourns
The second-term governor and former long-serving Kenya Tea Development Authority director is also among many other leaders who have contracted coronavirus and ended up in hospital.
Nyamira county secretary James Ntabo on Tuesday said Nyagarama was recuperating at the hospital.
He urged residents to remain calm and ignore rumours about the governor’s health as pronounced by some social media bloggers.
Nyagarama’s family confirms his death and latter says he succumbed to covid-19. In addition, Nyangarama’s son, Gideon Momanyi, had dismissed reports on social media that purported the governor had passed on.

His death comes hours after the governor’s family issued an update on his health on Thursday, following reports that he was on life support.
Former Prime Minister and ODM Party leader Raila Odinga mourned Nyagarama. He also describes him as an extraordinary partner in strengthening devolution, and he will treasure the moments they shared in the line of duty, and as personal friends.
“I am deeply saddened to learn of Governor John Nyagarama’s death. My sympathies to his family and the people of Nyamira as we mourn his death and reflect on his life. Nyagarama has also been an extraordinary partner in strengthening devolution. I will forever cherish moments with him on duty and as personal friends. May His Soul Rest In Eternal Peace,” said Odinga.
